My name is Lauren Brych. I am in my third year of college, going for a degree in Art Education. I am mainly interested in Drawing and Painting, although I have found a new liking for the weaving loom. I have often found myself lost within society, and being able to express one’s self is something that I feel every individual needs to be able to experience. Creating artwork can be very theraputic and stress relieving. I hope that the new skills I acquire will help broaden the minds of young aspiring artists.
I became involved with the Lord of the Rings series this past summer. My friend enjoys reading and watching the trilogy every once in awhile. He owns every film and book, and has helped me better understand the relationships between kingdoms and certain characters. At certain times, I would confuse Eowyn with Arwen, or Theoden with Minas Tirith, but in the end, I managed to straighten out all of the connections. I watched all three movies first so I could better understand and visualize the context of the storyline. I was surprised to find out how many similarities there were between the films and the novels. Peter Jackson managed to put alot of information from the books into his films.
The things that I would like to discuss in this course are the deeper relationships between particular characters. Such as the relationship between Aragorn and Eowyn, Aragorn and Arwen, as well as the relationship between Sam and Frodo, just to name a few.
Harry Potter is the most enthralling book series that I have ever read, and I am currently trying to read through all seven books once again. I realize that some people do enjoy both Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter with an equal passion. However, out of the many individuals that I know, they either like one series or the other. I am one of those people and I find a great deal more interest in the Harry Potter series than the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I have never been much of a fan of Lord of the Rings because it mainly revolves around warfare and an overall seriousness that adults can find a better appreciation for. On the other hand, Harry Potter seems to welcome young readers into a world that they can easily relate too. I am well aware of Harry Potter containing battles of good versus evil, and several war-like scenes, but it often provides a childlike theme. Harry Potter allows me to escape the stressors in my world, while Lord of the Rings seems to enhance them.
It took me several years to give in to peer pressure and begin watching and reading the Harry Potter series. Since I have found an appreciation for Rowling’s series, I hope to atleast discover a better understanding when Reading Tolkien’s work.
