Eligh Hanning

I’m a second semester sophomore with a dual major in Sculpture and Jewelry Design.

My father read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings when I was young. After a few years I reread the books myself and developed my own personal preference for the books. When the movies entered theatres I immediately saw all three and my passion for Tolkien’s work was reinvigorated.

Rather than focusing on similarities and differences between the books and movies, I am more interested in studying the humanity of the characters. Were certain characters portrayed more realistically than others and which medium more efficiently showed that humanity? Comparing and contrasting is not as engaging to me as discussing the theory behind direction and writing as well. I hope to delve deep into Tolkien’s head as well as director Peter Jackson to help understand the motives behind different events and characters. I wonder how much of everyday life and even historical events are portrayed or referenced in The Lord of the Rings.

In regards to the Harry Potter series, I am not an obsessive fan, but an avid reader nonetheless. I picked up the first book when I was nine years old and have steadily read them since. The level of fantasy involved with both Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings enthralls similar people, leading many individuals a fan of both series.
