The Tolkien Society (U.K.) An international society located in the U.K. and devoted to the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. The society sponsors annual meetings of various kinds and their website serves serves as a sort of clearing house for news concerning Tolkien.
The One Ring Net The official website for the films of LOTR and The Hobbit. It is definitely a fan site and is not useful for scholarly research. If you are interested in information about the filming of The Hobbit this is a good place to look. (Not a scholarly website)
Encyclopedia of Arda Extremely useful for looking up characters, places and events in LOTR. Some maps and a great list of international websites devoted to LOTR. I do not know who the creator of this website is, but he obviously knows a lot about the books.
Tolkien Studies This journal is THE invaluable source for anyone interested in Tolkien scholarship. It includes articles, notes, book reviews and a superb annual bibliography.
Tolkien Gateway This is a sort of “Tolkien Wikipedia.” It is created by fans and therefore should be used with caution, but you might find some good links there.
Note: Wikipedia is an excellent place to check out the names of the “Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky” but it is not a scholarly source.

Amon Hen Selection From the MLA International Database — This page is on the International MLA database and contains a multitude of articles and essays on Tolkien and The Lord of the Rings from “Amon Hen,” a journal published by The Tolkien Society. You will have to order most of them through IILIAD sadly.
Weta Workshop — This is Weta’s homepage. Weta was a main contributer of the special effects for the films.
Lambë Eldaiva: The Language of the Elves — This site has a lot of translations from the Elven Language Quenya (The ancient Elf language used primarily before the events in the trilogy.) It also has much insight on how the language developed in Middle Earth.
Who is Tom Bombadil? — An essay from the “Mythlore” journal exploring the character Tom Bombadil. It addresses his nature, origins, and purpose in the world of Middle Earth
Lord of the Rings Fan Fiction (Fansite) — This page contains many fan-written stories that are based off of Tolkien’s world. They could be useful for those researching the topic of the cult-like fan following.

The Tolkien Music List This website includes a list of more than 1,000 artists whose songs were inspired by the works of Tolkien, or refer to them. You can click on each song and see the lyrics. This shows how widespread Tolkien’s influence is, that his writings have greatly influenced pop culture and music.
Khazad- The dwarf page Devoted to dwarves. It includes info about characters from all three ages, some history and general dwarf info, and pictures from the movies, maps and artwork.
The LOTR Score Analysis Project Includes Howard Shore’s music from the films, it appears in a catalog and attempts to analyze each section of music.
LOTR Costume Research site Info about costumes from the movies, including directions on how to make your own!

About the Songs and Poems in the Lord of The Rings This site has all of the songs and poems from the Lord of the Rings as well as explanations and links to illustrations.
What is Tom Bombadil? This is an essay studying the character of Tom Bombadil and suggests several possible interpretations of what Tom is and what he does.
A Tolkien Dictionary This is an online dictionary of names, words, places, and most everything else from Middle Earth.
The Lord of the Rings and Catholicism This site explains many possible religious influences in the Lord of the Rings.
The Tolkien Timeline This site lists the important events in Tolkien’s life.

The Lord of the Rings: Style, Language and Poetry This website attempts to explain the style, poems and languages used by Tolkien in his boodks and thier importance to the story.
Art work of LOTR For anyone looking to write a paper on the art work based on the book, this is a very good site to compare the art work of three different artists and their presentation of the book.
The Music of the LOTR The site consist of all the music composed for the movies and explainations as to why particular songs were used for certain scenes.
The Catholic Perspective This is a fun site and it is an interesting site as it gives a different perspective and meaning to the LOTR.

Lord of the Rings Soundtrack- this is a good site talking about the music of the films

The Lord of the Rings Fantasy World- This website has many features. It is a fun website that gives a detailed description of characters from the movies. It also has reliable information about Tolkien’s life and gives a long list of books that have been written about his works. There is even a page of fan art.
