This is much too brief — I can’t really tell what your paper is going to be about. Please expand on this, explaining how you plan to develop your thesis. Lydia Fish October 30, 2008, at 12:12 PM
This is a very…VERY rough outline. When a paper is 15 pages long and still in progress, I find it difficult to map out exactly what I’m going to do like I would for a much smaller paper. I hope breaking it down this way is okay.
INTRO: introduce the main ideas, and the thesis: “Peter Jackson went to great lengths to make the films as historically accurate as possible while staying true to Tolkien’s story; and the weapons and armor of the Lord of the Rings are no exception.” The main ideas are that many different eras and types of weaponry was used in the films, from primitive axes to cutting-edge swords (no pun intended), and that Jackson had all the weaponry forged on-site.
I intend to spend roughly 40% of my essay (or ~7 pages) speaking about the processes that Jackson’s team went through to actually make the swords and keep them historically accurate, as well as discuss some of the historical processes that were used in the forging of swords and armor to give the reader a sense of how intricate these movies really are.
I then want to go into detail (approximately 30% of the paper or 4.5 pages )on some of the weapons of the film and their history + significance within the Tolkien world. I’ve found that many of the weapons found in the movies have generations of history attached to them. For instance; Hadhafang - the saber-like sword that Arwen wields against the Wraiths at the river - was wielded by her father in the great battle alongside Isildur many centuries earlier. And that only scratches the surface of its lineage.
Excluding the Introduction and conclusion, of course, I want to spend the rest of the time (~2 pages) talking about various inspirations that the weaponry of the Lord of the Rings has on today’s culture, and the impressions that general medieval and renaissance weaponry has had on our culture (movies, stories, and fantasies).
