Topic: Shakespeare and Tolkien
Croft, Janet B., ed. Tolkien and Shakespeare : Essays on Shared Themes and Language. Boston: McFarland & → Company, Incorporated, 2007.
A collection of articles all talking about the similarities, influences and contrasts between Tolkien and Shakespeare’s works. There are many articles contributed by many authors so I am only creating a bibliography for the book as a whole until I further decide which articles to use.
Drout, Michael. “Tolkien’s Prose Style and its Literary and Rhetorical Effects.” Tolkien Studies 1 (2004): 137–63.
Article discussing Tolkien’s poetic style and often references Shakespeare’s influence. Compares the two frequently.
Hopkins, Lisa. “The Hobbit and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Mallorn : the journal of the Tolkien Society 28 (1991): 19.
King Lear. Dir. Michael Elliot. Perf. Laurence Olivier. DVD. 1984.
Film adaptation of Shakespeare’s King Lear. Shows similarities between direction and film versions of Shakespeare and Tolkien.
An article that discuses Tolkien’s use of Faerie as compared to the faeries of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Marples, Laura. “The Hamletian Hobbit.” Mallorn : the journal of the Tolkien Society. 40 (2002): 15.
Another in-depth article discussing the influences of Hamlet on the character of the Hobbit. Shows Shakespearean influence in Tolkien’s character development.
-I’m having some issues finding peer reviewed articles online as most anything I come across it already contained in the book by Croft.
